Anticipation

Activity 1

Standard: RIT.4.4 Craft and Structure (Vocabulary)

Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.

In this activity, students will be introduced to several words that appear in the beginning chapters of the book. The teacher will ask the students if they know any of the words that were written down to see if they have prior knowledge of that word. The teacher will then split the class up into groups and they will be given the task of finding the definitions of each word through the use of dictionaries. Next the students will complete the assignment shown below and match the vocabulary words to the right definition. This pattern can be used throughout the book "Holes" for each chapter.
Assessment: The teacher should make sure that each word goes to the correct definition.

This activity should take about one class period and the primary purpose is to get the students introduced to the concept of what happens to juveniles. The majority of the beginning of the book deals with the juvenile court system. To get the students more prepared for the plot development of the book, the teacher will have them complete a web quest about the juvenile court system. The teacher will split the class into pairs and then they will go to the computer lab to work on the web quest. During the next class period, there will be a classroom discussion to make sure that the students have a clear understanding on what the juvenile system consists of.
Assessment: The teacher should make sure that the students answer each question that was posted on the web quest.

Activity 3)

Standard:RL.4.7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas (Comprehension)

Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.

This activity will tap into the student's prior knowledge and clear any misunderstandings that the students may have. The teacher will show the students the book "Holes" and the teacher will read the summary of the book from the back. The teacher will also show the students the picture of the front cover to the students as well. Lastly the teacher will show the students a picture of a desert since the majority of the book takes place in a desert. Then the teacher will ask the students to use the KWL chart shown above to show what they know about deserts. After the students have written what they know about deserts then they will share their answers with the class and the teacher will write them on the white board. Then the students will have time to write down what they want to know about deserts and that will be shared with the class as well. As for the last column, when the students are finished reading the book, they can take this work sheet out again and fill in what they have learned about deserts.
Assessment:The teacher should see that each student is participating in the activity.

Activity 4)

Standard:RIT.4.7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas (Comprehension)

Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.

In this activity, students will go to the website http://www.kerpoof.com/#/activity/draw and they will draw a scene from the book and the other students have to try and figure out what event the student was trying to exemplify. This activity will challenge the students to visually picture the scene and then draw it out in the web tool. The students are also able to express themselves creatively and no two pictures will be exactly the same.
Assessment: The teacher should make sure that the students are able to explain their drawing in a concise way and that it actually pertains to the story.
